So I know that bacteria of many different species live in and on our bodies in colonies without causing any problems. I also know how bacteria make us sick by releasing toxins. But rather recently, I watched a Ted talk on quorum sensing and how bacteria communicate with each other and know how big their colony is. And it mentions how that when they realize that there are enough of them to do some actual damage to the host, that's when they launch their attack. But why do they do this? Weren't they already living happily in a colony? What do they gain from doing all this?
